If you have not seen Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) then you are really missing out on what may very well be one of the best anime ever released, let alone one of the best of this summer’s line up.
Attack on Titan takes us into earth’s distant future, though it doesn’t quite seem that way at first. Humanity has been brought to the brink of near extinction because of the Titans, giants that prey on humans. Humanity has taken refuge behind three walls and has survived in isolation.
The story centers around the life of Eren Jaeger and his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman, whose lives are changed forever after the appearance of a colossal Titan brings about the destruction of their home and the death of their mother.
This anime is intense, violent, and dark.It is very much driven by a strong combination of stunning action and an intricate plot. We are drawn the characters very early, which is good, because everything in this series seems to move rather quickly as there is a 5 year time skip within the first few episodes, followed by a time skip several months ahead after the characters training.
Attack on Titan has a very original and intriguing story. The characters are not your annoyingly happy and optimistic sort that you find in anime that have dire situations. In episode 6 we see that a very young Eren goes after Mikasa when she is kidnapped, and he brutally murders 2 adults to save her. Following Eren’s encouragement to fight or her life Mikasa snaps and kills the third kidnapper herself. When confronted by his father on the matter Eren explains that he was just putting down vermin.
The fact that they play the gritty and darker parts of human nature straight in this series, is probably one of the more appealing things about it. Combine that with the very beautifully done fight sequences and the creativity of the choreography and the perfect musical score and you have a masterpiece.
Eren x Mikasa
I will admit it here an now, I’m officially shipping the two main characters even though its an obvious ship. Mainly because they both are strong leads that don’t overpower each other and you can see the lengths to which they will go for each other. These characters obviously love each other very deeply and they are both very much aware of it.
Their motivation to kill the Titans is so deeply set into their minds however that the only other priority they have is their devotion to each other, rather than any romantic feelings that may go along with those. Given their circumstances (and the fact the Mikasa may be a functional sociopath) it is understandable and still gives us something interesting to potentially look forward to in the series.
At first I didn’t think I was going to like this character. He reminded me of the whining crying little brother character that everyone wants to protect. Then I realized he is becoming Jim Hawking from Outlaw Star and I began to genuinely like him as the groups “lancer” character or strategist.
Attack on Titan is anime that is more than worth watching and already promises to be one the best releases of 2013, and rumor has it a live action film may be in production as early as 2014. If you enjoyed series like High School of the Dead, then this is for you!
