Sword Art Online Overview:
In the year 2022, the Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG), Sword Art Online (SAO), is released. With the Nerve Gear, a virtual reality helmet that stimulates the user’s five senses via their brain, players can experience and control their in-game characters with their minds.

Sword Art Online Review:
This is arguably one of the better Anime of 2012 and for good reason. It has a fantastic premise, stunning visuals and a soundtrack to die for if you enjoyed Fate Zero’s music.

Fan’s of the .Hack series will also find many similarities in this series they will enjoy but on a much larger scale since all the characters are trapped and have different psychological responses to the situation. That is one of the real draws of this series.

The other thing Sword Art Online has going for it is the amazing action sequences of the hero characters as well as the intense ethical situations they deal with as they struggle to survive the game, protect each other, live out their in game lives, and finish the game to return to the real world.

One of the characters that I really feel was underdeveloped and under utilized was Sachi, a girl Kirito meets and befriends early in the series who he fails to protect. She is a strong central motivation for him, but I feel the impact she had on him is lost on the audience due to pacing and how early she is killed off before we and Kirito can explore how he actually feels toward her and what she means to him

The MMORPG aspects of the series are very well done. The boss battles are another great treat as are all the action sequences. They are nothing short of gorgeous.

KxAsaokiss 300x168 Sword Art Online ReviewThe romantic scenes in Sword Art Online were very cute and in my opinion tastefully done if a bit rushed through. There is very little filler in the series but it is still there and given the other pacing issues in Sword Art Online that can be annoying. The overall best couple was probably Kirto and Sachi followed by Kirito and Leefa. While Asuna is an amazing character in her own right once here and Kirito are together as a couple she loses some of her independence on in the second arc of the story is completely dependent on him to rescue her. And though the plot surrounding this makes sense it does nothing to develop her character as we grow more attached to Kirto and Leefa and value their relationship more.

Overall this is an epic anime that has something for just about everyone and gives us characters that we care about and a plethora of stunning visuals.

Sword Art Online Overall Score: 9/10
