The second episode of the new season doesn’t pull punches and dives right into the VRMMO action in Gun Gale Online. We get to take a closer look at Sinon and the squad that she is in and we find out that she has managed to acquire and eltie weapon Hecate II a sniper rifle with impressive stats. You can think of it of as the gun equivalent of Kirito’s Dark Repulsar from Season 1. In any case we learn a bit more about here as a player and some of the rules of Gun Gale Online. The action in this episode is pretty sweet and it was interesting to see Sinon’s personality and approach to confronting an impossible situation. She dealt with it much the way Kirito and Asuna would, she assessed the situation and acted decisively calculating the best way to win.
Sinon and her squad are tricked by the enemy and end up encountering a body guard using a mini gun that initially overwhelms them. Moreover the player they are facing has never been killed in a squad battle before. Sinon is able to rally her team mates who initially want to quit and give the other team the win rather than taking a death penalty. She is able to bolster their resolve and charge the enemy, taking out everyone but the mini gun.
In the end we see why Sinon is becoming one of the top players in GGO. She takes a bold leap (literally) and snipes the enemy at point blank range from above, even at the cost of a leg, to win the match. This was a great scene because it really set the tone for what we can expect in the series going forward, and it was only the second episode. That kind of progression echoes back to what made Sword Art Online so good in season 1 initially. Elsewhere we follow Kirito in ALO with his friends and Asuna and their daughter/sprite Yue. Kirito begins to tell Asuna that he will be leaving ALO for a while and why. If you haven’t seen the SAO specials prior to this, it means its the first time you may have seen Asuna’s new ALO avatar if you didn’t pay close attention to the last episode of SAO season 1 to realize this is her.
Overall the episode was very good and was much stronger than the first episode, accounting for the fact they had to bring us up to speed and introduce the new game and it’s premise. GGO explained itself very well it out it feeling heavy handed and we got some great action sequences and the epic SAO music that is a big part of this series. It was a solid episode and I think it honestly deserves a 10/10.
