Sword Art Online Season 2 Episode 3 Review

In Episode 3 of Sword Art Online Season 2 we learn more about Sinon and her life in the real world and why she joined Gun Gale Online. Sinon is being bullied at school because she has a phobia of guns. It’s so bad that she actually freezes up and starts to have a panic attack to the point where she double’s over and vomits. Even someone pretending to point a gun at her with their finger is enough to induce a panic attack.

She is rescued by her only male friend, who is also the person who introduced her to Gun Gale Online. He is an agility type player and as a result of the new changes in the game he feels like he can’t progress and the Sinon has left him behind. She tries to encourage him and cheer him up by changing the subject to school and grades. Apparently his father expects him to be a doctor since their family runs a hospital. He doesn’t seem that interested in it, but is following his families wishes. Sinon thanks him for the rescue earlier and he expresses that he wishes he could always protect her. This relationship seems to mirror the relation Kirito and Saachi had in the early episodes of Sword Art Online Season 1.

Apparently in a robbery when she was young she was put a position where she was forced to kill a robber to protect her mom, using a hand gun. This scene was longer and more graphic than I imagined it was, but the played it true to the light novels, and it was a good dark moment that establishes why Sinon has a fear of guns and men in real life. She has been bullied constantly as a result of it.

For some reason she can get over these fears when she is in Gun Gale Online and that is the reason behind her playing it.

This episode was strong but there were some moments I won’t cover that felt like they were heavy foreshadowing or spoilers so I will keep this reviews short and give SAO II Episode 3 a 8/10. I liked the character development and felt it was a good episode that advanced the plot and balanced it with action via the robbery flashback. It loses points for how little screen time Kirito and Asuna got.
