Sword Art Online II Episode 4 takes us more into the world of Gun Gale Online and follows more of Kirito’s story as he transfers his character into that world. Part of the reason that he transferred his account instead of making a new one is for the same reason he did with ALO, so that he could maintain his stats and have a chance at competing in the BoB (Ballad of the Bullets) despite being a newbie.
As a result he retained his strength and speed making him an Agility type player. One thing he immediately notices when he logs in is that his avatar ended up looking very feminine due to randomly rolling a rare avatar class, and it immediately creates complications as everyone mistakes him for a girl!
Sinon is one of the first person’s he meets and ask for help and she also assumes he’s a female player and is very open to helping him as a result. Through this sequence of her explaining things to Kirito we get to understand more about the world of Gun Gale Online and how things work. Kirito doesn’t have a lot of in game money to spend on equipment, Sinon offers to loan him some but he turns her down and decides to earn the money himself by entering into a special gambling game that focuses on dodging bullets.
Kirito using his natural reflexes rather than relying completely on in game assist, is able to dodge the bullets and win the jackpot, giving him enough money to get proper weapons and gear to enter the BoB.
Kirito isn’t as comfortable with guns and finds something more to his liking, an energy sword commonly called a plasma sword or beam saber. He picks a purple beam saber and tries it out impressing Sinon while also making her suspicious about his overall abilities. She may suspect he is a survivor of SAO based on what she has seen of him so far.
Sinon picks a handgun for him and takes him to the shooting range to teach him how to use it and how the in game assist works for aiming. Afterward they realize they are running out of time to register for the BoB so they grab a Buggy Motor Bike which are supposed to be very difficult to control but Kirito has no problems. He points out that he has experience with this from playing racing games all the time.
This episode was really good and advanced the plot and still held our interest despite how little action it had. I give it a 9/10.
