Golden Time is one of those Anime’s that the staff here is really divided over. And believe me it comes down to more than just Team Linda vs Team Koko (I’m Team KOKO all the way), although I will say that is probably the root of it. In my opinion the plot of Golden Time is a cautionary tale about not seizing the moment when it’s in front of you.
Too often people find excuses or reasons not to confess their feelings or own up to them. Golden Time is a story about the consequences of this kind of insecurity and the effect it can have on your relationships. It’s also a caution about the need to be honest with yourself and others, as nearly every major plot point that has negative consequences could be avoided by this (just like in real life).
This is actually something all of us agree on. The things that divide us is which Banri to root for, and which girl he should be with. This seems trivial at first, but it comes down to the thing that drew most of us to this Anime in the first place, “we’ve all been Tada Banri”. At some point all of us have been past/ghost Banri and present day/amnesia Banri.
Personally I empathize more with present day Banri. The current Banri may be plagued by insecurities, but for the most part he is honest and straight-forward with his feelings and asserts himself. He’s also bold and decisive as well as independent for the most part. In contrast his past incarnation was very needy and dependent on others and could easily be overwhelmed by the need for acceptance or the reality of rejection. He also had a hard time confronting others and choosing to value his own feelings, he made Linda the center of his universe and apparently would do nearly anything to get the attention of a girl.
While many of us have been there (both guy and girl), and we may empathize with past/ghost Banri, he is (at least in my opinion) the weaker version of the character. I feel that Ghost Banri in the series was meant to observe Present Banri so he could learn from his previous mistakes and grow as a person and learn to move on instead of desperately clinging to past and Linda.
Ghost Banri himself observed that Present Banri did things very differently than him and was direct in his feelings and pursuit of Kaga Koko, and he himself pondered on what might have happened if he had done that with Linda in the past. In the next episode he briefly regained control of his body, but immediately lost it by deciding to run straight to Linda. I feel this itself demonstrates that the point I just made. He needs to learn from his mistakes, not try to repeat them or undo the past.
