Valvrave Episode 10 Review

Valvrave Episode 10 review

Valvrave the Liberator episode 10 could be described as intense, at least the first and ending portion of the episode. The middle portions of the episode had more to do with establishing the situation within Module77. This episode explains quite a few things a moves the plot along and isn’t boring despite the lack of battles and action sequences. Fair warning everything that follows this paragraph is a HUGE SPOILER, so please watch Valvrave Episode 10 before reading.

In the beginning of the episode we have what the Valvrave’s are explained to us, something I appreciate them getting to in Episode 9 considering we never fully get this explanation throughout all of Evangellion. What I don’t like is the fact that in explaining it we basically are told that they figured out how to produce Valvrave’s due to “Runes” information particles found within all living things? Sound familiar? MEDICLORIANTS?!

We also find out that Valvrave Unit 01, Haruto’s Valvrave is special. It’s not yet explained what this means, but that Haruto’s Valvrave and the additional powers he receive are connected to the Navigation program installed in his unit. Again seems like we’ve seen a similar scenario in both Evangellion and Gundam Wing via Heero Yui’s Zero System and Shinji’s Berserker Mode.

This episode was really essential to moving the plot along and I understood that within minutes of watching. Still it was an episode that left us with as many questions as answers. I also think it is interesting to see Rukino and Haruto’s relationship progress despite the fact he is in love with Shoko.

In fact Hartuo attempt to confess to Shoko, as he did on the day the series started when they were attacked and he thought she died. What I never really understood, is with how much life and death is in this show early on that he didn’t do this sooner and do a complete confession, or why she didn’t for that fact of the matter.

In any case Rukino vows to help Haruto control the urges and if they overtake him completely she vows to save his humanity by killing him so he won’t have to live as a monster. By the end of the episode she takes this vow to the other extreme thinking that she is going to allow Haruto to bite her and “hijack” her body as he has done with others. Instead the demon rage desires more than that this time, and Rukino surrenders her body to him willingly after he starts ripping at her clothes.

This is going to setup very interestingly for the next episode let alone the whole series. But I can’t help but think that this series keeps throwing us curves to keep us interested. This episode had a lot of emotion and as I stated earlier it does move the plot along, but aside from a little fan services and the dark cliff hanger at the end the episode doesn’t quite match the intensity of all the other episodes up tot his point. I give this episode a 7.5 out of 10.

Problems I have with this episode (or the series overall):

  • How many ways can you bite off other series? or science fiction franchises? It was one thing when we were seeing a mashup of every mecha anime over the last 2 decades, but now you have added MEDICLORIANTS to the mix!? Really?
  • Why are you referring to Haruto’s Valvrave as UNIT 01? Are you seriously not aware of the Evangellion anime? Or Gundam Wing for that fact? And Unit 01 is “Special” This is just too blatant.
  • The teenagers in this series for all they have been through are still a little too cheerful and a little too cooperative. Not nearly enough of them are taking the gravity of the situation to their logical conclusions.
  • Shoko chose to blindly ignore Haruto’s obvious confession.
  • I don’t entirely understand why Haruto’s demon keeps getting worse. Why is  Rukino able to stop him from attacking others but not herself? Why did he let him (more or less) rape her? And did she seem to embrace/accept it?
